"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a children's novel written by L. Frank Baum
and illustrated by W. W. Denslow. It tells the story of a Kansas farm girl
named Dorothy who ends up in the magical Land of Oz after being swept away by
a tornado with her pet dog Toto. She learns that she cannot return home until
she destroys the Wicked Witch of the West. The book was initially published in
1900 and was followed by thirteen additional Oz books. The novel's success
prompted Baum to write sequels. The book is one of the best-known stories in
American literature, and the Library of Congress has declared it to be
"America's greatest and best-loved homegrown fairytale." The novel has
inspired multiple stage and screen adaptations, including the 1939 film "The
Wizard of Oz." Baum was influenced by Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in
Wonderland," and the original illustrator of the novel, W. W. Denslow, greatly
influenced the way it has been interpreted. The book has received positive
critical reviews upon release and has been praised for its bright and joyous
atmosphere.
